Case Study: Organization Development

The Problem – A large non-profit organization was interested in improving the way staff access social resources in order to move the strategic agenda forward. The lack of collaboration within groups and between groups was not occurring.

The Solution – Social resource accessibility competencies were assessed and served as a baseline for introducing training across functional groups throughout the organization. Monthly social resource activities were introduced within functional groups and cross-functional group activities were conducted quarterly. Performance goals at the departmental level were tied to other departments and individual staff goals were linked to organizational members within and outside their immediate groups. As a result, goal attainment was directly linked to staff within and outside their groups, ultimately increasing collaboration between individuals and groups.

Case Study: Community Employment Program

The Problem – The length of time that it took individuals to find employment in the program was problematic due to the funders requirements.

The Solution – An issue identified in the delivery of the training program was that participants we’re motivated to find employment while on site. However, once they were out on their own, it was hard for them to remain motivated. The agency incorporated the job search management board which provided structure to the participants job search process, thus giving them a sense of direction and a greater likelihood of maintaining a level of motivation between on-site and off-site activities. Ultimately, the time it took for participants to make the transition back to the labor market was reduced.

Case Study: Communication Flow

The Problem – Communication within a mid-size consulting firm was limited between project groups, thus creating redundancy and an increased time for completing projects.

The Solution – Conducted a social network analysis to determine who in the network was central to the group and who were outliers. Once identified, central members (or influencers) were assembled in a training program to align them in order to open up communication flow between various project groups. As a result, communication flow was opened and more importantly, the messages being delivered via the influencers was in keeping with best practices, thus decreasing the time it took to complete quality focused projects.

Case Study: Academic Performance (High School)

The Problem – Students academic performance was not in keeping with the regional averages.

The Solution – Worked with students to identify career paths in order to connect curriculum to practical uses. Once a career path was identified, taught students to how to access social resources to determine which members could help support the career path. Essentially, students were learning how to identify opportunities that could lead to academic success (i.e., finding individuals who can assist them in specific subjects).
